FIREFIGHTERS have issued a safety warning after an elderly man set fire to his recycling bin today.
The man, living in Culver Road, Newbury, had been cooking but his poor sight meant he threw away a scrap of card that was still alight.
A crew from Newbury Fire Station used a hose reel to put out the fire in bin.
Crew manager Sid Shepperd said the fire could have been 'much worse'.
He said: "It could have been much worse if the call had not been made earlier.
"The fire would have been detected quicker if the gentleman had a smoke detector on the ground floor of the property.
"It's a fire safety warning, if you do have fire protection it should be on both levels of your property."
