A HOST of walks, exploring Newbury’s heritage, are being held throughout August.

The first one, which takes place tomorrow (Friday, August 5) will look at art and architecture in the town.

The guide is Jane Burrell, a former curator of West Berkshire Museum, who now gives talks and lectures on local history, war-time poets and the history of Reading’s The Abbey School.

The second event, which takes place on Sunday, August 21, will be led by David Peacock and will take in Northbrook Street and Speenhamland.

Mr Peacock, who is the author of The Story of Newbury, will talk about the town during the coaching era and the Speenhamland system.

The third and final walk of the month, on Monday, August 29, will take in Market Place, Newbury Wharf, Victoria Park, Newbury Lock, Northcroft Lane and the south of Northbrook Street.

Led by Jeremy Holden-Bell, the chairman of the Newbury Society, it will explore Newbury’s history from the Domesday Book to the modern day.

Tickets for all of the walks are available from the Corn Exchange, Market Place, Newbury and cost £5 for adults and £4 concessions, with under 16s free.
