THE LAUNCH of the 37th International Newbury Spring Festival went off on a high note at Newbury Racecourse.

On Tuesday 4, Paul Hughes, general manager of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, opened the festival.

Penny Waghorn, press co-ordinator, said: “Paul was delightful, he told the most hilarious stories and it really was a fantastic way to open this year’s festival.”

The two-week festival from May 9-23, will present some of the world’s leading musicians in 45 concerts in 20 venues in and around Newbury.

BBC Symphony Orchestra and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra will be making their Newbury debuts.

The Philharmonia Orchestra, Mahan Esfahani, Adam Walker, Endellion String Quartet, Calefax and choral groups Voces8, Tenebrae and Ex Cathedra will all be returning to the festival.

Ms Waghorn said: “This year we are so fortunate to have such an array of musical talent, there really is something for everyone.”

The fornight programme will also feature a revival of Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpieces, and showcase some of the best young talent from around the world.
