YOUNG chefs whipped up a storm at the culmination of The 'S’ Word cookery competition.

More than 60 guests gathered at the Honesty Cookery School, North Sydmonton, last Tuesday to celebrate the success of 10 young chefs from local schools.

The 'S’ Word competition encourages students to enjoy cooking with local, seasonal produce.

More than 100 students from five West Berkshire schools took part in the competition organised by the Education Business Partnership West Berkshire (EBPWB).

The competition began in January and students from each school worked in pairs to create a two-course meal from local and seasonal produce.

Teacher, Cheryl Wheeler, from The Clere School, said: “The 'S’ Word inspires the students to learn more about local foods and sustainability – it is a fabulous competition!”

Romilla Arber, of Honesty, and her executive chef, Matthew Ambrose, worked with the students to prepare a seasonal menu comprising spinach and wild garlic veloute, roast cannon of lamb and forced rhubarb and meringue tart.

Melanie Watt, from EBPWB, said: “The students really enjoyed their fantastic experience, where they had an opportunity to learn from talented chefs and promote their achievements to all of our guests.

“It was a lovely evening and a fitting way to celebrate The 'S’ Word competition.”

The winning teams were from The Clere School, The Willink School, The Downs School, Little Heath School and Kennet School.
