Snoozer 'saved' by smoke alarm
A SNOOZING man who awoke to find his kitchen engulfed in flames was saved by his smoke alarm, firefighters say.
The 48-year-old victim fled his first floor flat in Fallows Road, Aldermaston Wharf, when the fire broke out at 7pm yesterday on Wednesday.
Crews from Tilehurst's Dee Road and Newbury fire stations arrived within minutes to tackle the blaze which badly damaged the kitchen and cause severe smoke damage to the rest of the flat.
Neighbours helped the man from the building before paramedics treated him for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Newbury fire station watch manager Bob Mitchell said: "It just shows the importance of having smoke alarms. Without his he may not have woken up."
