Drivers asked to observe road closures

DRIVERS in West Berkshire are being asked to observe temporary road closures put in place to guard against flooding.

Road closures have been implemented, and vary each day, as part of West Berkshire Council’s Adverse Weather Plan, and the council is urging drivers to obey closure signs.

Flood warnings are in place for the River Kennet from Thatcham down to Reading, Pangbourne at Purley and for the River Thames at Goring to Streatley.

Flood alerts are in place for the River Kennet from Hungerford to Newbury, the River Lambourn and for the River Pang from Pangbourne to Sulham.

The council is working with Thames Valley Police, the Environment Agency and Thames Water to help those affected.

West Berkshire executive member for highways and transport Cllr Pamela Bale said: “We have had reports of people going through road closures.

“It is illegal to do this and could be potentially life threatening. Driving through flood water can cause huge bow waves that can then cause further flooding to nearby properties.”

Call 01635 519080 or visit www.westberks.gov.uk/reportaproblem to report flooding on the roads.
