Drivers are being advised to avoid the M4 motorway this morning after a lorry packed with linen caught fire, blocking the route between junctions five and six linking Windsor and Langley.

Police and firefighters were called at 5.30am. Six pumps had to be used as teams from fire stations across East Berkshire doused the flames.

Two engines from Slough, one from Langley and one from Maidenhead rushed to the scene while a water bowser from Camberley was brought over.

Four firefighters needed breathing apparatus. The lorry was totally destroyed.

Two lanes were initially closed as the lorry was moved to the hard shoulder, though all lanes have now reopened.

Major tailbacks are still reported at 10.15am with approximate delays of at least one hour.

Normal traffic conditions are expected by noon.
