Despite the game starting 10 minutes late due to Newbury players getting stuck in traffic, the visitors began the game well and had an early goal disallowed for offside, but the Sumas came into the game and fired a couple of warning shots as captain Chris Yeatman put an effort over before Luke Scope put his shot wide.

The striker then had another chance following good work from left back Jack Gibbs, though the visitors also came close to opening their account when Curtis Angell whipped a ball across the face of goal.

Wokingham took the lead in the 22nd minute when a hopeful long ball beat the Town defensive line, allowing Scope to unselfishly square to strike partner Julian Harley who side-footed home.

Newbury then shot themselves as Lachacz endured a moment of complete madness, arising after he blamed skipper Ben McCready for playing Scope onside.

After a verbal altercation, the players began shoving one another and Lachacz threw a right hook at his captain (pictured right), leaving the referee with no alternative but to send him off.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Newbury came close to equalising as frontman Jeff Kalajaiye blazed over Sean Woodward’s goal, although Scope could have doubled the lead at the other end when he showed good strength before volleying over the bar.

The second half proved an entertaining affair with opportunities squandered at both ends.

McCready had the first chance of the second period as his free-kick was comfortably saved, before Dave Parry scuffed a volley wide.

At the other end Gibbs showed his trickery to beat three men but crossed when he could have shot, while Parry was just unable to connect with Angell’s shot for Newbury.

Scope then fluffed a chance from a Gibbs cross before he rounded the goalkeeper only to miss an open goal.

With time running out substitute Dan Carter blazed over for the hosts, before Kalajaiye missed a chance and Woodward was forced into a save from Darren Jones.

Gibbs then shot over when he could have scored, but it did not matter for Wokingham as they held on for the win. Newbury travel to Rayners Lane in the quarter finals of the Bluefin Sport Challenge Cup on Saturday (3pm).

Hungerford Town FC HUNGERFORD Town earned a hard-fought point at play-off rivals St Neots Town following a 1-1 draw in the Southern League Premier Division.

In front of a crowd of more than 350, the hosts started brightly and Crusaders goalkeeper Paul Strudley had to be on his mettle to keep the scoreline goalless early on.

However, the visitors took the lead when Stefan Brown finished from Clark’s pass after 20 minutes, before Dean Stow shot just wide in another good attack.

Hungerford maintained the lead until half time, but the home side attacked strongly after the interval.

However, Strudley was equal to every St Neots effort until Nathan Prater headed home from a corner in the 52nd minute.

And although chances came and went at both ends, neither side could fashion a winner.

Newbury Ladies slipped to an agonising 3-2 defeat against Aldershot Town, despite Caroline Harkness scoring a brace in the Premier Division of the Southern Region Women’s League.
