However, Newbury levelled matters in the 18th minute when second row Josh Winfield finished from close range, Ritchie West slotting the kick.

An interception try from Leighton’s Ben Beaumont put the visitors back in front, but, in an end-to-end game, Newbury full back Toby Thorne dotted down shortly after and West’s conversion made it 14-14.

The Buzzards regained the lead before the break after the home side strayed off side, David knocking over a penalty to make it 17-14 at the break.

And despite playing into the wind, they extended their lead in the second half when wing Luke Stanbridge scored in the corner with David’s excellent conversion giving them a 10-point lead.

As the game became more physical, Newbury No. 8 Ryan Davis was sent to the sin-bin and they were reduced further following a scuffle, with Buzzards scrum-half Ed Ratcliffe also receiving a yellow card.

A fourth yellow card of the game was issued to Leighton centre Euan Irwin for a 66th-minute tip tackle, and Josh Bartlett grabbed a converted try for Newbury almost immediately after.

Then in a dramatic finale, Steve Denner went in under the posts before West added the extras to seal a memorable victory for Blues, who stay sixth in the table and travel to Maidenhead on Saturday (3pm).

Thatcham RFC were beaten 17-7 at home to High Wycombe in Southern Counties North. They sit fifth in the table and travel to second-bottom Alchester on Saturday (3pm).

Alex Lewington scored two tries as London Irish sealed a thrilling 25-23 victory in against Sale Sharks in the Aviva Premiership on Sunday.

The visitors made a fast start, with Tom Arscott crossing the whitewash.

Chris Noakes – recalled at fly half ahead of Shane Geraghty – put Exiles in front with a pair of penalties, but with Tom Court in the sin-bin, Sale went back in front thanks to a Mike Haley try.

Irish went back in front on the stroke of half-time, with Andrew Fenby capitalising on a Sale mistake and race away for a converted score.

Blair Cowan became the second Exile to be yellow carded just after the break, and a Cipriani penalty levelled the scores.

A second Arscott try put Sharks ahead, before they had Chris Cusiter sin-binned. Lewington crossed the whitewash after Noakes’ had kicked to the corner from the penalty, and although Topsy Ojo became the third hosts’ player to be sin-binned, another Lewington score sealed the victory.
