NEWBURY Blues began 2016 with a 23-6 win at High Wycombe in South West 1 East.

Ryan Trevaskis kicked a penalty for Blues which was quickly cancelled out.


But Blues pulled ahead through a Ryan Davis try, converted by Trevaskis.


Wycombe reduced the gap to 10-6 with another three-pointer, but Blues raced clear with a Trevaskis penalty and a try from man-of-the-match Ben O’Shea.


Blues had the final say when George Robinson-Slater touched down late on.


Blues host bottom club Swanage & Wareham at Monk’s Lane this Saturday (3pm).


Thatcham RFC will be aiming for a winning start to the new year when they return to Southern Counties North action this Saturday.


Thatcham have won just one league game all season after a 19-12 success against bottom-of-the-table Swindon College Old Boys last month.


Thatcham remain next to bottom and six points from safety with one game in hand. They travel to Bletchley this Saturday (2.15pm).


Tadley Tigers lost 24-5 at Milton Keynes in the Southern Counties North Senior Vase semi-final on Saturday.


Heavy rain made playing conditions difficult and the match was littered with errors from both sides.


Tigers were only 3-0 down at the break but Milton Keynes pulled away with two converted tries in the second half.


Tadley, with a mixture of youth and experience, reduced the arrears when a well-worked lineout ended with flanker Rhys Donaghue touching down for an unconverted score.


But the hosts scored again soon after to seal their place in the final
Tigers return to Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier action this Saturday when they travel to Chesham (2.15pm ko).


The Red Lane club have won their last four fixtures in the league and lie fourth in the table.
