MARK Kendal and Jane Brackenbury won the men’s and ladies’ championships at West Berks for the third year running.

Scratch handicapper and eight times champion, Kendal, shot 79 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday to win by six shots from his brother Jason and said: “I’ve been a member here for 15 years and the course just seems to get better and tougher each year.

"With the conditions, this weekend has been the most difficult I have ever known it."

Overnight leader with 75, Luke Prestoe (9hcp), shot 88 in the second round to miss out on second place by one shot.

Matt Thomas claimed the Wise Trophy for 12 to 18 handicaps with 184, winning by one shot from Dan Read with Shaun Ponsford third on 189. Men’s captain, Kevin Hopwood, won the Bennett Trophy (over 18 handicaps).

Brackenbury (9hcp), won the ladies championship with a score of 183, with Tina Mulford taking second place. Sandy Miller won the overall nett prize and Ann Davies and Gale McAuley respectively won the first and second round nett prizes.

Meanwhile, West Berks beat Bicester 3-0 in the quarterfinal of the Central Sevens knockout cup and will meet the winners between Cotswold and Hadden Hill in the semi-final.

Five-handicapper Tony White won his third midweek competition in succession when he won the midweek medal with a net 72. Garry Dixon with 76 beat Alan Weddell on count-back to take second place.
