TADLEY Tigers Under-12’s finished runners-up in the cup final of the Gosport & Fareham tournament.

The team went unbeaten in their group and had a hard-fought semi-final against Winchester that finished 0-0 after extra time and had to be decided on the toss of a coin.

They were eventually beaten 10-0 by Andover in the cup final, the only two tries they conceded all day.

Tadley 1sts return to BB&O Premier action this coming Saturday when they host Swindon College Old Boys, while Hungerford travel to Phoenix.

Newbury Blues

SECOND-placed Newbury Blues thrashed Windsor 47-24 to pick up a bonus-point win in their South West One East clash on Saturday.

The hosts took an 11th-minute lead when the ball was spread through the hands of Joe Pigott and Josh Bartlett before Mike Walker crashed over in the corner. Dan Thorne slotted the conversion to make it 7-0.

The lead was doubled midway through the half when Walker collected his second, Thorne again converting with a superb strike.

Things got even better for Newbury just two minutes later when Bartlett made good ground before off-loading to Toby Thorne, the wing sidestepping his man before going in under the posts.

Dan Thorne maintained his perfect record from the tee as the hosts moved 21-0 up.

Windsor crossed for their first try on 33 minutes, but Newbury secured their try bonus-point just before the interval when the impressive Walker completed his hat-trick after Dan Thorne broke through the visitors’ defence. Thorne added the extras to make it 28-5 at half time.

Newbury’s fifth try arrived 10 minutes into the second half, with their forward pack showing its strength to force a pushover try from a scrum for Rory Jones. Thorne missed his conversion for the first time on the day.

Two minutes later it was 40-5 after Ollie Spanswick broke through several tackles for a superb individual score, Thorne landing the kick.

After 20 minutes without a score, the game burst back into life in the closing stages, Windsor running in two tries in the space of three minutes to cut the gap to 40-17, only for Newbury to reassert their authority courtesy of a second try of the afternoon for Toby Thorne, the wing finishing off another free-flowing backs move.

Dan Thorne was again on target for his sixth successful kick from seven attempts.

It was the visitors who had the final say, however, some poor tackling allowing the east Berkshire side to secure a try bonus-point of their own as the clock ran down.

Newbury travel to Banbury this coming Saturday (3pm).

Thatcham RFC

THATCHAM return from a week off when they host Bletchley in Southern Counties North on Saturday (3pm).

First-half tries from Ben Ransom and Joe Trayfoot – aided by eight points from the boot of Tommy Bell – gave Exiles a comfortable 18-7 lead at half time, Ealing player-coach Ben Ward crossing for the visitors.

Further scores from James Marshall and Scott Steele confirmed the victory, with Matt Cornish’s try a late consolation.

London Irish will look to continue their perfect start to the season at Nottingham this Friday evening (7.45pm).
