London Irish

WASPS youngster Alex Lozowski put the boot into London Irish in their 43-22 victory at Adams Park.

The talented fly-half kicked 23 points in their win on Sunday which boosted their hopes of progressing to the LV= Cup knockout stages.

But defeat for Irish left their chances of going through hanging by a thread after a second defeat in the competition.

It was cat and mouse early on as the kickers traded penalties, with Myles Dorrian slotting two and Lozowski one to put Exiles 6-3 ahead.

However, Wasps nudged in front when Simon McIntyre crashed over for the first of their four tries, with Lozowski adding the extras.

The sides then traded another two penalties each before Irish’s Leo Halavatau touched down for a converted score which gave the visitors a 19-16 lead at the interval.

Exiles pulled even further ahead early in the second half through a Dorian penalty, but that was to be their last points of the afternoon.

Wasps, on the other hand, dominated the rest of the match and regained a 23-22 lead thanks to a Josh Basset try in the corner which Lozowski converted.

The hosts - who are set to leave Adams Park to relocate to Coventry - added further tries through Guy Thompson and Elliot Daly, with Lozowski on target with the extras again.

And the stylish Wasps No.10 completed an excellent afternoon’s work by landing two further penalties to secure a bonus point and their first win in the competition.

Despite the defeat, Exiles forwards coach Glenn Delaney insisted the experience will benefit a host of young Irish players who were involved on the day.

“We were in the contest at half time and we scored a good try that put us back into it,” he explained. “It was nip-and-tuck until about 20 minutes to go and I think the scrum was probably the difference between the two sides.

Exiles return to Aviva Premiership action this Saturday when they travel to struggling Sale, who are one position beneath Brian Smith’s men in the table.
