A WOMAN and her dog escaped unscathed after her vehicle crashed into the M4 central reservation and burst into flames this afternoon.

A woman, believed to be in her thirties, swerved to avoid a slowing down vehicle, lost control and crashed her Mini into the central reservation between Junctions 12 and 13 of the M4 at around 2:45pm today.

Upon hitting the central reservation, her bonnet caught fire, but the driver and her dog managed to leave the vehicle unscathed.

John Murby, of Dee Road Fire Station, said they were called to the incident at around quarter to three this afternoon.

He said: "The car is completely destroyed but the female driver and her dog were absolutely fine. We stayed on scene for about 20 minutes."

James Wright, a spokesperson for Highways England, confirmed that all lanes Westbound had been open since 3.20pm.

He said: "Initially all lanes were closed west and eastbound due to the position of the car and the amount of smoke. However, by 3.20 all lanes were reopened."
