HUNGERFORD Town produced one of the greatest results in their history to comeback from 2-0 down to secure a 3-2 victory at Hitchin in their Southern League Premier Division play-off semi-final last night.

After a goalless first half, Hitchin went in front on 56 minutes thanks to a Brett Donnelly goal, and a Robbie Burns strike three minutes later looked to have put the hosts through in front of a crowd of more than 1,300.

However, Hungerford had other ideas and they hit back shortly after through Scott Rees, before James Clark equalised.

And the away supporters were left delirious after Stefan Brown struck an 84th-minute winner to set up a play-off final against Leamington at Bulpit Lane on Monday (3pm).

Hungerford had just missed out on a home semi-final tie in the play-offs after drawing 0-0 at their final opponents on Saturday.

The point was also sufficient to give Leamington the final spot in the play-offs, much to the delight of their fans in a crowd of more than 700.

Hungerford had secured their play-off place with a 3-0 win at Histon last Tuesday, their sixth successive game without conceding a goal.

They again defended well at Leamington and keeper Paul Strudley was hardly tested in the opening 45 minutes as both sides cancelled each other out.

Sam Austin, with a free-kick and then a shot, was not far away from breaking the deadlock for the Crusaders, while Matt Day saw his header force home keeper Tony Breedon into making an excellent save.

Leamington had appeals for a penalty turned down when they thought Scott Rees had handled in the area, but Hungeford also had a couple of penalty shouts of their own waved away by referee Guy Stretton in his final game before retiring.

With 30 minutes remaining, manager Bobby Wilkinson made three substitutions, but James Rusby, Nat Jarvis and Harry Goodger were also unable to unlock the home defence.

Goodger came off the bench to score at Histon last week, after Brown had netted twice in the second half.

Newbury defeated Unity 1-0 on Saturday to seal a top-five finish in the Thames Valley League Premier Division with Joshua Stevens the man on target. But they ended the game with 10 men after Kye Franklin had been shown two yellow cards.

Newbury’s final fixture is at home to Mortimer this Saturday.

King’s Head Thatcham were beaten 2-1 by Wraysbury Bentons in the Berks & Bucks Sunday Intermediate Cup final at the weekend.
